The Moriches Bay Project is proud to continue our partnership with the Brookhaven Town on Eelgrass restoration. This year we will begin a long term project with 2 motivated graduate students in Marine Science at Stony Brook University who will lead this program. They have joined our team to help facilitate the eelgrass restoration work we are doing. They will lend scientific guidance to this project. They plan to conduct dive surveys to evaluate the current status of existing eelgrass restoration areas, organize seagrass seed collections and deployments, and the transplanting of eelgrass to restoration sites survive.
We are looking for serious volunteers to help with this eelgrass restoration project. You will be collecting eelgrass seeds from an eelgrass bed in Great South Bay for planting at a restoration site in Moriches Bay.
We are looking for volunteers for 2 types of work:
- We need volunteers that are comfortable snorkeling in shallow areas of Great South Bay and can bring their own mask, snorkel, and fins (not essential). A wet-suit would be great but not essential.
- We also need a few volunteers to count and organize the seeds into bags to save for deployment at a later date.
